Project Summary:

Svalbard is an archipelago that lies in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Given its location, Svalbard represents arctic nature in its original state, characterized by unparalleled scenic beauty, but also by local wildlife that is sometimes inhospitable.

From April 20 to August 20 each year, Svalbard features an exciting natural spectacle — the midnight sun. The sky is illuminated by the Nordic light for 24 hours a day, presenting a rare opportunity to encounter polar bears, endangered species and other creatures living freely in their natural habitat.

There are no roads between the island settlements, and transportation is limited to boats, planes, helicopters and snowmobiles. When travelling outside Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard and home to more than 2,000 residents, polar bears can pose a real danger to residents.

To better illuminate the avenues of Longyearbyen during months of extreme darkness, city officials chose to replace the existing outdated high pressure sodium street lights with industry-leading Cree LED lighting. The city deployed 450 Cree LEDway® Road street lights, each installed at a distance of 30 to 50 meters and a height of about 8 meters.

The high-quality light output of the Cree LEDway Road street lights reflects off the snow, providing even better illumination on the city’s streets. Since Longyearbyen’s energy is very expensive, the energy-efficient Cree LED fixtures provide significant energy and cost savings and a rapid payback.

Thanks to the new Cree LEDway Road street lights, the local government has estimated an annual savings of 70 percent compared to Svalbard’s previous high pressure sodium street lights – the equivalent of about 193 tons of coal per year with significant carbon dioxide reductions.
