Town of Selargius

Sardinia, Italy

Project Summary:

Selargius is a town of about 29,000 inhabitants, located in the southern part of Sardinia a few kilometers from Cagliari. With significant architectural beauties, the town mixes modern buildings and classic campidanese houses, while retaining important monuments, such as the impressive Church of San Giuliano, in Romanesque style dating from the 13th century, and the central square with the Church of Beata Vergine Assunta from the 16th century.

The local administration actively promotes tourism activities in the area and is also committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 20 percent by 2020, adhering to the PAES program (Action Plans for Sustainable Energy) promoted by the European Commission. Among the activities outlined in the municipal plan is the replacement of more than 2,500 obsolete discharge lighting fixtures within municipal areas.

For the historic center of Selargius, RKT retrofit kits by Cree® were chosen and mounted on about 200 traditional fixtures, harmonizing with the town’s Mediterranean style. In other areas of town, more than 2,300 units Cree® XSP Series have been installed and configured to fit the lighting requirements of various street types, while maintaining a uniformed style for all public spaces. In addition, other LED devices are slated for future installation in areas that were not involved in the first round of installs.

Energy Savings:

Cree lighting systems will enable a significant reduction in emissions, equivalent to an overall reduction of about 3,832 tons of CO2 throughout the installation’s lifetime (average yearly CO2 savings of 383kg) with energy savings of 65-70 percent, compared to the previous system.

(The project was executed by COFELY SpA and managed by Eng. Massimiliano Manis)

Long Life:

“We are very pleased with the results of this project. Thanks to Cree devices, the Municipality of Selargius now has an innovative lighting system that is creating unprecedented results,” said Alessandro Targetti, Sales Director, Cree Europe. “Moreover, our LED solutions will ensure significant cost and emissions savings to the municipality and the local community, adding value to the cultural and architectural heritage of this area.”
